“Redundancy” [Song Demo]

Mutineer Song Demo ImageI’ve always liked this song, even though it has a little darkness to it. There’s a lot of frustration coming out in these lyrics.

When I look back upon it, this song feels somewhat autobiographical, in some cases shouting at me, “You’re on the wrong track, chasing the wrong things. Stop! You aren’t going to like where this goes!” And in a larger sense, I feel that way about much of popular culture and society today, and it scares me. That’s the part I thought I was writing about when this track was first conceived.

At the time I wrote “Redundancy,” in 2010, little did I know how much change I was about to go through. I was about to release my “No Schedule Man” acoustic CD, which I’d been working on, in bits and pieces, for more than a year. The release of that project was delayed as I got very sick and wound up in the hospital for almost a week. I had horrible back pain from two herniated discs and a pinched sciatic nerve, and ended up suffering a system crash from total lack of sleep. A strep infection settled in and off to the Emergency Room I went. Looking back, it seems obvious that the universe was telling me to do something different or not at all. But like the song says, “We keep praying for a breakthrough but we do the same things; A living definition – insane – can you feel me?”

I didn’t get the message. I got out of the hospital and plowed straight ahead with my plans, determined to make it work. But the only thing I got was more frustration and when my health finally did improve, I was then greeted with the news that my marriage was about to collapse, which it ultimately did several months later. What immediately followed was a series of complete life changes, from where I lived to where and how I worked, it all came crashing down.

I’m now a little bit haunted by the lyric line, “Have another look, did you know that you were bleeding? Maybe you’ve been cut by the lies that you believe in.”

Mutineer - "Redundancy" Lyric SlideAs I’ve already mentioned, when I first wrote this song, I don’t think I was meaning to talk about myself. And perhaps I wasn’t, but maybe it just seems that way because I repeated a pattern that seems so obvious when observing others: chasing the wrong things and being completely oblivious – even righteous – about it.

The pre-chorus of “Redundancy” features some of my favorite lyrics that I’ve ever come up with: “Racing the the rats, inheriting lies, chasing ‘the dream’ while integrity dies.” I love that passage, even though I know it jumped up and bit me before I finally “woke up.”

If I could look at that same passage differently today, it might say something like, “Learn to love yourself and be true to who you are. Don’t bother chasing things that aren’t in line with your values. You’re just comparing yourself to others and think that you should want what they want. In reality, they don’t even know if they really want what they are chasing after. So when you follow them, it’s like trying to make a copy of a copy of a copy of a counterfeit.” I might say that, expect that’s not very musical.

My point: I believe we’ve got way too many people (I used to be one of them and still struggle to avoid the trap) who are following behind people who don’t know where they’re going, listening to people with little of value to say. It’s a bad recipe. It doesn’t end well.

I know that from experience. But at least I’ve got this song 🙂

I can feel a breakdown
Fallin’ all around me
And I have had enough
People, tell me – can you feel me?

We keep prayin’ for a breakthrough
But we do the same things
A living definition
Insane – can you feel me?

Racing the rats
Inheriting lies
Chasing the dream
While integrity dies

We are a technical breed
Who organically
Are feeding ourselves
Into redundancy

We have become the machine
Systematically
We’re racing ourselves
Into redundancy

Have another look
Did you know that you were bleedin’?
Maybe you been cut
By the lies that you believe in

Monkey gonna see
So a monkey gonna do it?
Take a look around
Monkeys ain’t this stupid

Racing the rats
Inheriting lies
Chasing the dream
While integrity dies

We are a technical breed
Who organically
Are feeding ourselves
Into redundancy

We have become the machine
Systematically
We’re racing ourselves
Into redundancy

Man, I just wanna scream
Can’t you even see
How hard can it be?

I just wanna scream
I just wanna scream
How hard can it be?
How hard can it be?

We are a technical breed
Who organically
Are feeding ourselves
Into redundancy

We have become the machine
Systematically
We’re racing ourselves
Into redundancy

  • What a great song and the meaning behind it. It is so true. People do follow other people only to be dragged down. I guess it’s too easy just to follow the crowd instead of making your own path. Thank you for sharing this song.

  • Another great song, Kevin! I can see how your experience directly led into the lyrics of this number. The theme isn’t a very explored one either, but now that I think about it I can see just what you mean. I think this is the consequence of comparing yourself to people rather than just being influenced.

I’ve felt it at times too. When someone is similar to you, you naturally feel you should be like them. But as your song warns, some people try to be them, even when the originals are making things up as they go along.

Again, awesome song. Looking forward to your next piece!

    • Thanks Mohammad! I appreciate your encouragement.
      Be well,
      Kevin
